8 August Genoa & Portofino

An early start today with our excursion to Portofino. It was a 45 minute bus trip to the Italian Riviera where the rich and famous supposedly hang out. On that note, the Saudi Royal family trying to be unobtrusive got on our bus enmasse beyond the last minute making us late. The group was minus the King but there were a couple of minders being discrete and all of them trying to act normal. Being in the VIP section ourselves we can’t be fooled with that Palaver and had a wee chuckle. We consider it a bit of a game really. The Queen couldn’t help herself later on when it came to boarding the Ferry from San Margarita to Portofino, a Ferry crew member blocked her way as 50 people were converging on one gang plank and somebody was gonna go in the water if he didn’t intervene. In the middle of this she demands that her party all go on straight away and the crew member stood his ground with her (he didn’t know who she was) I quietly said to her that it was a safety issue and I am sure there will be enough room for us all. She seemed to settle down then. (I knew who she was) With us were some Turkish Honeymooners and an American family from Illinois. They made a comment about how rude and demanding she was and who did she think she was. At that point ever the namedropper, I quietly told them exactly who she was. The honeymooners thought it was a great joke and Brenda became a sneaky paparazzi and took a few photos. Some people have no class.
. (Bill says it might pay for her trip) Headline “Saudi Royal Makes Waves in Italian Riviera”
Portofino was lovely, clear water, amazing Super Yachts and a charming ambiance all of its own and we had time to explore. Bill and I climbed a hill and saw a gorgeous little church on the top with awesome views then climbed still higher to a castle called Castela Brown. The rest of our time was spent exploring the generally overpriced shops and seeing if we could find any treasures.
On our return and a hasty lunch we spent a relaxing couple of hours in the Yacht Club pool area, drinking “Dirty Bananas” and reading a book in the sun. My suntan is starting to look presentable. After that we showed Buzz how to use his life jacket during a ship drill. On the sail out saw the Allinghi catamaran in dry dock. Now immortalized for you all to see. Marseille tomorrow in the South of France .Off to Aix-en-Provence.
